Sadaqah Jariyah is ‘continuing charity’ — a gift whose reward keeps flowing to the giver long after the original donation has been made, and even after the giver has passed away. The Prophet Muhammad ﭐ named it as one of only three deeds that continue to benefit a person after death. Here are twelve forms of Sadaqah Jariyah, and how each one delivers reward that never stops.
“When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: a continuing charity (sadaqah jariyah), beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him.”
— Prophet Muhammad ﭐ (Sahih Muslim)
What is Sadaqah Jariyah?
Sadaqah means voluntary charity given for the sake of Allah. Jariyah comes from the root j-r-y, meaning ‘to flow’. Together, Sadaqah Jariyah is charity that flows — that keeps benefiting people, and the giver, year after year.
Where ordinary Sadaqah feeds one family for one day, Sadaqah Jariyah feeds many families for many years. It is the long game of giving.
12 powerful forms of Sadaqah Jariyah
1. Build a tubewell or hand pump
The Prophet ﭐ was once asked, ‘Which charity is best?’ He replied: ‘Water.’ (Abu Dawud). A single hand pump can serve a family for decades; a deep-bore village well can serve hundreds of families for generations. Build a well in your name →
2. Sponsor a madrassah student or teacher
Beneficial knowledge is one of the three deeds named by the Prophet ﭐ. Sponsoring a Hifz student or a madrassah teacher seeds knowledge that will be passed to dozens of further students — your reward multiplied each time.
3. Contribute to a masjid
‘Whoever builds a masjid for the sake of Allah — even like the nest of a sand grouse or smaller — Allah will build for him a house in Paradise.’ (Ibn Majah). Even a contribution towards prayer mats, the wudu khana, or carpets earns ongoing reward whenever someone prays in that masjid.
4. Plant a tree or fruit-bearing crop
‘If a Muslim plants a tree or sows seeds, and then a bird, or a person or an animal eats from it, it is regarded as a charitable gift for him.’ (Bukhari)
5. Print and distribute Qur’an copies
Every time someone recites from a Qur’an you gifted, the reward is recorded for you — potentially for the lifetime of the mushaf.
6. Pay for school fees, uniforms, books
Sponsoring a child’s education changes the trajectory of an entire family, lifts a household out of poverty, and creates a contributing adult who will give to others.
7. Fund vocational training and equipment
A sewing machine, a barber’s chair, a delivery cycle — tools that turn a beneficiary into a provider. Each item creates ongoing income, often for two or three generations.
8. Endow a library or learning resource
Books, computers, study spaces — resources that are used by readers and learners for decades carry the reward of every page turned.
9. Sponsor a Hifz programme
A child who memorises the Qur’an will recite it for the rest of their life and, by the grace of Allah, intercede for their parents and their sponsors on the Day of Judgement.
10. Build a wudu khana or toilet block
Clean ablution facilities at a masjid or madrassah carry reward every time someone prepares for prayer using them.
11. Help marry off the daughters of widows
Caring for a widow is, in itself, an act the Prophet ﭐ compared to jihad in the way of Allah (Bukhari). Helping cover the modest cost of marriage releases an entire household from a financial impossibility.
12. Establish an endowment (waqf)
A formal endowment — whether a building, a plot of agricultural land, or a fund — carries reward as long as the asset benefits people. This is one of the most powerful forms of Sadaqah Jariyah in Islamic legal tradition.
